We’re halfway through the Masters—that annual leisure-class test of proficiency for taking long walks while hitting small balls into slightly larger holes—but if you didn’t realize that, it’s okay. The term “golf clap” exists for a reason: the whole sport’s shtick is to be a little hushed. Luckily, there are some ace storytellers to help keep us out of the woods with their hole-in-one coverage of the sport (3 golf puns in that last sentence, just saying). From the reporters to the photographers to the official gear editor for the PGA tour, these are the ones to follow if you want to understand more about golf than just how to win at Golden Tee.
Props to reporter Matt Ginella for making topography interesting. He covers golf courses for Golf Channel’s Morning Drive, the only AM talk show dedicated entirely to the sport. During tourney season, he’s a source for maps, travel info and pretty practical intel. Year-round, #GinellasJourneys is never short on eye-popping travel inspiration.
This is Ashley’s third year reporting live from the Masters for Golf Digest, but she’s on par—count it! another pun!—with more seasoned journos thanks to her social media prowess. She’s running her magazine’s channels 24/7, giving followers as close to an IRL experience as possible. If you’d rather watch than read, follow her on Snap at ashleykmayo.
The cameraman pioneered a new type of course photography, embracing close-ups and artful angles—a welcome departure from the tour-guide brochure fare of most course pictures. His favorite time seems to be when no one’s on the course, so his best Augusta shots come during the course’s quiet months.
Jonathan Wall is the type of person who can caption a photo of a brand-new Titleist putter with a skull emoji and have it make sense—he’s the equipment editor for @PGATour so it’s his business to know the ins, outs, ups and downs of any hardware on the course and explain it to us. Which he does, in beautiful photos.
We’re not saving the best for last, per se, but Janie Dim is definitely one feed even non-sports fans would love. Her feed is home to unironic debates like this about which OG hightop makes a better golf shoe (we say @Nikegolf) and gorgeous action shots of her swing perfection.
