When January hits, there are a few things movie lovers can rely on: boring theater releases (yikes, Ride Along 2), heated Oscar buzz, and new indies competing for future Oscar buzz, courtesy of The Sundance Film Festival.
The Park City festival is often a launchpad for will-be smash hits, and while there’s no guarantee that every project gets snatched up by a distributor, we’re pretty confident these creatives will be heating up the snowcovered ground.
All newcomers hope for a break like this—Ben Schnetzer grabbed a role opposite Nick Jonas in a drama that examines fraternity hazing. With James Franco helming production, you can be certain this is not Animal House, nor is it a flash-in-the-pan for Schnetzer.
Narges Rashidi’s protrayal of a woman struggling to survive a crazy-chaotic bombing in 1980s supernatural Tehran in Under The Shadows is getting lots of early attention, thanks to exclusive leaked clips—and the film’s slot in the Midnight Lineup, where The Blair Witch and Saw once premiered. (And there’s plenty more positivity in the quotes that Twiggy regularly posts.)
Taika Waititi’s new adventure comedy Hunt for the Wilderpeople isn’t just premiering at Sundance—it grabbed the prestigious Friday night slot during opening weekend. He’s a comedian in his own right, and he’s currently in talks to direct the third installment in the Thor series.
