Thrifting the Island: Iceland’s Stylish Set

Thanks to cheap airfare, short flights, and truly breathtaking natural beauty, seemingly everyone, and, by extension, your Instagram feed has been to Iceland in the past few years. The far north European country’s main attractions are insane landscapes, filled with gorgeous geysers, massive waterfalls, awe inspiring volcano interiors, and expansive, horse dotted fields; it’s no wonder that Game of Thrones has filmed there for years.

Besides the remarkable surroundings, while nearby cities like Copenhagen and Stockholm may have better known fashion scenes, Reykjavik’s is on the rise. From cheeky designs created by local talent—cutting her teeth at outré label Jeremy Scott—to well curated vintage threads, check out these style purveyors, whether on the island or on social. Gangi þér vel!

This hip secondhand store carries strong selections of ’80s and ’90s logoed sportswear (think Champion, Fila, and the ilk), great denim, and a killer range of faux fur statement coats. It’s basically everything you need to ace a Vetements-meets-Shrimps aesthetic, for a whole lot less cash, and that cool cache of saying, “Oh, this tee? I got it in a vintage store in Iceland.”

Seven years ago, Reykjavik native Helga Lilja launched Helicopter, an indie fashion line with a focus on seamless day-to-night dressing (think: lots of fluid dresses). Expect slouchy sweaters in vintage looking neutrals, and muted printed dresses, plus watercolor-esque patterns and vividly colorized photo realistic prints.

Named for its mononymous designer, Eyglo, who started her career with boundary-pushing labels like Jeremy Scott, AsFour, and Bernard Wilhelm before launching her own line in 2006, the line consists of edgy ready-to-wear pieces with a sense of humor. Read: lime green jackets emblazoned with the face of Jessica Fletcher, Angela Lansbury’s protagonist on ’80s TV hit Murder She Wrote.
