10 Oscar Nominees to Follow

With the 91st annual Academy Awards this Sunday, awards season is definitely in full swing. For film lovers everywhere, this means a final push to binge as many nominated movies as possible so you can at least pretend you know who is who and what you are talking about during the show…

For our team, OSCAR is just another word for Insta-stalking the nominees while picking apart behind-the-scenes photos and candid captions in order to see if they are still worthy of our devotion. We’ve prepared a cheat sheet of our 10 “Best Follows” across the categories of actors, producers, directors, and designers.

Regina King

⭐️ Nominated for: Performance by an actress in a supporting role, If Beale Street Could Talk

While Regina is undoubtedly the most Instagram-popular nominee on our list, we follow this actress/activist/mother because she uses her platform to lift up women in her life. Whether it’s shouting out a friend on her birthday or celebrating women she thought deserved more recognition this awards season, Regina’s feed is a great source of girl power inspiration.

Spike Lee

⭐️ Nominated for: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, BlacKkKlansman

Although he’s been previously nominated for five Oscars, we hope he can finally take home the award for BlacKkKlansman.

Yalitza Aparicio Martinez

⭐️ Nominated for: Performance by an actress in a leading role, Roma

It’s no surprise Yalitza Aparicio Martinez’s Instagram following shot up a staggering 35% in the past 30 days: she’s gone from a quiet life in Mexico to becoming a Hollywood star for her leading role as Cleo in Roma.

Mark Ronson

⭐️ Nominated for: Best original song, Shallow – A Star Is Born

He has worked with Miley Cyrus (“Nothing Breaks Like a Heart”) and Amy Winehouse (he won producer of the year for “Back to Black”). His feed gives us behind-the-scenes access to all our favorite artists-of-the-moment, including Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, and Camila Cabello.

Glenn Close

⭐️ Nominated for: Performance by an actress in a leading role, The Wife

You may know Glenn Close from her roles in Fatal Attraction, 101 Dalmatians, or this season’s nominee, The Wife. Having only joined Instagram in December 2018, this Hollywood icon gives us an unfiltered, behind-the-scenes look at her life and some classic #FBF.

Ruth Carter

⭐️ Nominated for: Achievement in costume design, Black Panther

The woman behind the costumes for films like Malcom X and Selma is nominated again for Black Panther. Her feed, unsurprisingly, is filled with stars impeccably dressed and posts chronicling her incredible 30+ year career. Plus, if she wins, Ruth will be the first African-American woman to take home the Oscar for costume design.

Domee Shi

⭐️ Nominated for: Best animated short film, Bao

Domee Shi’s Instagram account is too. damn. cute. Filled with her original illustrations, including those from best animated short nominee, Bao, Domee’s adorable posts pull at our heartstrings and brighten our feed.

Andrew Chesworth

⭐️ Nominated for: Best animated short film, One Small Step

You may not be familiar with his name, but you’re likely familiar with his work. He created illustrations for The Incredibles and Moana and is nominated for his animation in One Small Step. His Instagram feed is full of behind-the-scenes artwork not shared anywhere else.

Okay, last look back for now. For a majority of 2016, I was animating on ‘Inner Workings’ and ‘Moana’, and was feeling the itch to bring more drawing back into my life in a professional capacity. It was my first year having my own booth at CTN, so I did a lot of pop culture caricatures, and took a few commissions. One was even for Sarah Chase of ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ as a mole women cast gift. This helped give me a lot of confidence to take getting back into the drawing game more seriously, even if it was just the occasional illustration, storyboard or 2D animation gig. I had no idea Taiko and ‘One Small Step’ were right around the corner, and that soon I’d be doing more drawing than I had in over 6 years. My unfinished short film ‘The Brave Locomotive’ came back into my mind, and I finished the children’s book layouts for it. The center image is a gift from the wonderful @genevievetsai with a crossover of our characters. #topnine2016 #topnine #2016 #topnineinstagram #andrewchesworth #illustration #ironman #captainamerica #civilwar #buckybarnes #maui #anthonyhopkins #westworld #michaeljackson #thriller #thebravelocomotive #mermaid #mermay #molewomen #unbreakablekimmyschmidt #kuboandthetwostrings #themunsters #caricature

Marc Shaiman

⭐️ Nominated for: Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score and Original Song), Mary Poppins Returns

Between his hilariously relatable captions and this adorable post doting on talented friend and colleague, Katherine McPhee, Marc feels like the kind of person we want to be best friends with.

Adam Mckay

⭐️ Nominated for: Best Original Screenplay, Vice

Writer and Director Adam Mckay is considered an influencer in the film industry, and with a nearly 15% average engagement rate, he’s quite the Instagram influencer as well. With cheeky, socio-political content Adam perfectly serves up funny dad-joke-esque captions.
