Last week at the Cannes Film Festival, Cate Blanchett and director Agnès Varda led a march of 82 women organized by @5050×2020, an organization dedicated to “promoting equality and inclusion” for women within the film industry. The number 82 was no coincidence: Over the course of the festival’s seven-decade run, just 82 films (or less than 5%) have been directed by women. According to a document released by the organization, at least 30 of the 82 women present at the march were themselves directors. The rest included film distributors, producers, actresses, directors of photography, and screenwriters. Here, we parse the Instagram accounts of 15 of the female directors who marched.
