Guest Ed: Sabah x The Gramlist

Sabah is the name of New Yorker Mickey Ashmore’s biz. It’s also the style of shoe at the heart of his footwear collection—a slip-on made from naturally tanned leather held together by a special hand-stitched construction. He followed the shoes’ footsteps, which he first encountered thanks to a friend while living in Istanbul post-U Penn studies, out of the hedgefund world.

Craving a sense of community outside the financial world, he started hosting Sabah Sundays, creative gatherings of dynamic conversation, booze, and really comfortable handmade shoes. They became so popular, he quit the fund for good in 2013 and now runs his company out of his East Village townhouse. It’s actually the only spot you can get his shoes, and each pair is made to order. It’s allowed him to know every single customer on a first name basis—seriously—and he approaches Instagram in the same way—as a community.

Says Mickey, founder of Sabah:

I try not to check Instagram too often… but when I do its usually to see what’s happening with the Sabah handle (and post a photo), spy on my friends and people I “admire” and then look at design, architecture and travel images – because that’s fun!
