The Definitive Guide to Every A-List Celeb Who’s Not on Instagram, and Why

When it comes to the social media usage of very high profile people (and the people who wrangle them), there tends to be two schools of thought: One: The Busy Phillipps Method: Give ‘em the old razzle dazzle. Exist online as a a separate, complementary entity to your IRL persona. Extra credit if you can get a book deal and a syndicated talk show out of it. On the opposite spectrum, there’s who eschew public social media profiles entirely. In an age of tabloid journalism and reality television, where a famous person’s overexposure is almost inevitable, there is next to nothing quite as intriguing as a celebrity of stature who staunchly refuses to participate in social media all together. There are some, particularly musicians, Adele, Ed Sheeran and Kanye West among them, who waiver between connectivity and not, but for a very select crowd of (mostly) actors, not having a public profile is a way of life.

1. Tina Fey

📵 Why she’s not on Instagram: “There’s just not enough hours in the day for it really. And if we have time that we’re not working, we want to be with our kids. I’m not going to be curating what my meal looked like for Instagram or something. […]I’m just waiting to be able to show my nipples. If I can’t show my nipples, I don’t want any part of it.” (Additionally, when asked straight-up by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt collaborator Tituss Burgess, she responded, “Why would I give my jokes away for free?”) [via Entertainment Tonight)

🤩 Celeb friend who posts the most pictures with her: Tituss Burgess (@titusssawthis), who curated one of the greatest moments on Instagram (maybe the world) with his video of the two of them and Jane Krakowski lip syncing to Beyonce’s “***Flawless” on a private jet.

2. Jennifer Aniston

📵 Why she’s not on Instagram: “For me, it’s self-preservation. There’s enough written about me out there and enough that’s not true. There’s one school of thought, which is, ‘Why don’t you be on social media and really show who you really are?’ And I don’t need to… This is the one place I have that’s really protected and is mine and is what my life is without a camera rolling or paparazzi or media exposure.” [via Thrive Global]

📵 Why she’s not on Instagram: “Oh god, I would have one glass of rosé and be spouting off like [slurs voice], “This is not the truth!” I would have the “nuh-uh” column. I’m not ignorant of what’s happening out there. I look over people’s shoulders, going, “What is that little vignette of a cat on a fan?” I’m just lazy. But I’m going to get on it and troll my friends. Once my kids are using it, I’ll know how to navigate it. I don’t want to be naïve.” [via InStyle]

📵 Why she’s not on Instagram: “I’m like a dinosaur with that stuff, No. 1. But it’s also not really an organic sort of fit for me. I can barely remember to text people back! I also feel that my job is to persuade people that I’m somebody else, so if I reveal too much, then I’m doing my job a disservice, in a way.” [via Vulture]

📵 Why he’s not on Instagram: “To me, this is a product of us all having smartphones and being consumed by that. We’re looking down. No one is looking up. I take that seriously, even in the midst of being funny. I think it’s saying something really important and a little scary.” [via USA TODAY]

📵 Why she’s not on Instagram: “It makes me so crazy to look at social media. When you see people like, ‘This is the best life ever! I couldn’t be happier,’ you’re like, ‘Shut up, that is not true.’ Not everything comes together in the best way ever, every day. It just doesn’t. Even when your dream you set out for comes true, it’s not always perfect… That’s not the reality of life.” [via Elle]

9. Amy Poehler

📵 Why she’s not on Instagram: “I’m not a real social-media person. […] I try not to read too much online because I always get my feelings hurt, even if someone’s flattering you. Like somebody tweeting, ‘Call me crazy, but I think Amy Poehler’s attractive.’ And you’re like, ‘OK? Thank you?’ Or like someone writing, ‘I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that I’d have sex with Amy Poehler.’ […] The amount of Instagram selfies seems crazy out-of-control. The idea of, ‘This is my face and everyone needs to see it all the time,’ is so far from the privacy that people used to seek. Now everyone acts the way ’80s performance artists used to act. Everybody’s Karen Finley. Everybody’s like, ‘This is my vagina! I’m gonna put shit all over me and take pictures!’ When I was a kid, you’d go to a party or a punk rock show and you’d have fun, and you’d bring a camera, and you’d take pictures, and those pictures would stay inside the camera. Pictures were an addition to the experience. Now the picture is the experience. If I’m hanging out with a friend, and they take a picture of me, it’s like ‘Ugh.’ I mean, I hate looking at pictures of myself. It immediately takes me out of the experience.” [via PAPER]
