The Buffalo Social City Guide

If you’re not from Buffalo and find yourself speaking to a Buffalonian about Buffalo, chances are you will think that person is part of a very enthusiastic cult rather than a native of the Queen city, like one of our editors.

Yes, intense snowstorms blow (it’s the city that introduced John Oliver to Thundersnow) but amazing food, beautiful waterfront views and friendly people keep Buffalo warm. Located off of a Great Lake and next to one of the 7 Wonders of the World, with a touch of the Midwest, Canada, and a short plane ride away from New York City—Frederick Law Olmsted designed Central and Delaware Park —there’s a strong sense of place, history, and potential.

New energy fills the city. It may be part of the rust belt but it’s also on the rise. The affordable cost of living, opportunities in education, renewable energy, medicine and the arts, are bringing more young people to live, work and create. The skyline has changed, the canals unearthed. In the summer it’s a temperate palace, in the winter, a frozen wonderland.

It’s no coincidence we are launching this story today. We know about your Chicken Wing Festival and we are pretty upset we missed the Taste of Buffalo. Scroll through for some of our favorite feeds and remember, in the 716 it’s not like, it’s #buffalove.

The Bills Mafia, “created by fans, embraced by players,” is the #fambase of passionate football fans rooting for the Buffalo Bills. The city’s die hard sports fans would not allow Bon Jovi music to play in their bars when the singer hinted at purchasing and moving the beloved team to Toronto.

Buffalonians show love for all of Buffalo’s teams including hockey with the Sabres, Bandits Lacrosse and the Buffalo Bisons baseball at Coca-Cola Field.

The overhaul of an Erie Canal lock that helped turn Buffalo into a thriving metropolis in the 1850s has helped to transform the Buffalo waterfront anew. Concerts, fitness, food and more are availble on land while the water opens up a whole other playing field. Take a ride on The Spirit of Buffalo, kayaks or even paddle board in the summer. In the winter, the water transforms into a massive ice skating rink, conveniently located next to Harbor Center a complex housing NHL size hockey rinks perfect for tournaments of all sizes.

Don’t forget to check out Buffalo Riverworks, the Outer Harbor and Silo City, all located on the water.

Another Buffalo favorite? The zoo. Buffalonians have watched Luna the polar bear grow up in a newly renovated habitat. Founded in 1875, the zoo has steadily been undergoing facility improvements for years to keep the animals who call it home happy and healthy.

Other places to learn with the whole family include The Buffalo Museum of Science and History.
