INVITE: Block Party at 1600 Penn
October 05, 2016
A music and tech festival on the White House’s famed South Lawn? The Obamas really know how to wrap up their eight years at 1600 Penn. It’s fitting, since Obama’s the president who got everyone on Spotify with his summer playlists, gave his official photographer Pete Souza free Instagram rein, and genuinely has been the most “I get it” president of the people. Capping things off is South by South Lawn, a one-day festival modeled after the Austin originator with a similar name. On hand: the Stranger Things crew, Leo, a student film festival, and more. Here, five moments that already have us nostalgic.

All my The West Wing dreams coming true!! #sxsl
I came away from #sxsl inspired, moved, and with my mind on how I can play my little part in making our world better. This morning I had a great meeting over breakfast to turn thoughts into action with an eye on 2017. More to come. Thanks @barackobama.
The highlights were many, but for me it was watching Chuck Close take large-scale Polaroid portraits of student filmmakers, listening to President Obama and Leonardo DiCaprio talk about the urgency for [action on] climate change, and kicking back on the lawn to hear the Lumineers play. Music was everywhere in the White House, and this was a terrific performance by Gallant. To see and read more about the day, check out the #SXSL tag and www.whitehouse.org for more about this awesome event. #igdc
